A Florida jury awarded $45 million to the family of James R. Sada, who died after a heart attack. The lawsuit alleged negligence by Orlando Health and a cardiologist, Dr. Vijaykumar S. Kasi, citing over 20 instances of substandard care.
The suit highlighted critical delays in care and communication errors. Despite a STEMI diagnosis, Mr. Sada was first taken to an ill-equipped Orlando Health hospital, necessitating a delayed helicopter transfer to another network facility. This transfer bypassed closer, more suitable hospitals.
Further issues arose during intubation at the second hospital, including the alleged unavailability of a crucial monitoring device. Mr. Sada died an hour after arrival.
The plaintiff's lawyers argued Orlando Health prioritized its network over timely treatment, leading to fatal delays. The jury agreed, awarding $45 million in damages. Orlando Health did not comment. The verdict emphasizes the need for prioritizing patient needs over network affiliations in emergency care.
